Duke’s Joanne P. McCallie Taking Leave of Absence

Big news out of Duke University as Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie will take a leave of absence effective immediately. The school announced McCallie will be away from the team for approximately two months while dealing with a kidney-related ailment, according to Athletic Department. This comes at a crucial time as May will mark the start of major off-season training for many of the returning players including rising star Leaonna Odom, who will be without their leader.

Associate Head Coach Hernando Plannells and assistants Rene Haynes/Sam Miller will run the show in McCallie’s absence.

Tina Thompson Hiring Shakes Up The ACC

On April 16, 2018, Tina Thompson was announced as the fifth head coach for the University of Virginia. Just like with his homerun hire with Tony Bennett over a decade ago, Athletic Director Jeff White thought out of the box in bringing some youthful, high-intensity energy to the women’s program trending upwards despite the sudden departure of previous coach Joanne Boyle. To the casual basketball fan, Thompson’s hire may not seem like a big deal, but it is actually a much bigger deal for not just the campus, but the ACC (and all of women’s basketball for that matter).
